Topic: When to make my site paid?

Hi guys, I really want to have your experience and suggestions on this. My website has reached 4500 genuine members (900 female and rest male) in 3 months and I believe it is niche, dating for turkish people living abroad. It is free for now.

I am trying to figure out when I should make it paid. I made a poll before and out of 80-90 participants 15 of them said they would pay if they like someone and rest said they would never pay (there were only 2 answers available).

What do you suggest? What is your experience in making the site paid? And what would be sensible fee?

Make speciell features paid.
Let them use 80 - 90% of page for free and rest is reserved for paid members.

Example Video only for paid members or 10 pictures is free and unlimited pictures is for paid.

Just some ideas.

4500 in 3 month? wow awesome job.
A lot of people say they waited till they got like 10k + members before they added a paid section. But Im with Holger add an upgrade feature.

Thanks guys. Yea I easily achieved 4700 now with google adwords and some seo.

I think 10k is a sensible threshold...

I tried adding a sidebar paid "featured members" section for 3 days, but nobody wanted to pay... I think only way members may want to pay is if you give the privilige of sending messages to paid members only...

What I have seen in many dating sites in the country where I live is that registration and browsing/searching is free, but any kind of communication (messages, chat, wink, comment, etc.) requires some payment. I think that is a fair scheme, because members pay for what I would call "dynamics", if you know what I am saying. In the realworld, people pay for a phonecall, so in the virtual world people pay for a message. Fair deal.

Hello.
Before you reach thousands of members it's better you just limit some features to free membership.
IMPORTANT: Those users have to be allowed anyway to communicate with other members for free, but with some limits.
E.G. for free membership you can set they can:
1) send 10 messages per day
2) keep only 20 messages into mailbox
3) see only last 3 visitors
4) add only 3 friends
5) ...
6) ...
So, free membership members will be free to communicate anyway. This will help to grow subscriptions.
Then into you site promote a silver membership (very low fee) and a gold membership (higher fee) expanding the limits you setted and adding some features for higher membership level (a video chat, an horoscope, etc...).

Yes, I agree with that.
It not easy choosing between a good working site, that needs $$$ to exist.
And between members wh oare happy to pay.

I gave them first Gold account, and after a period the go to regular.
The have little options:
- only 1 message in mailbox
- not many winks
- ability to send winks so that they get resonse from other members
etc;...

So far I have 0 payed :-D
But hopefully when the traffic comes, they will.

That's when you have to start thinking about the taxes !!! ;-)
Don't think you'll get easy money.

you have 5k of members with pictures and profile information.

cancel all forms of direct communication between members free

only allows sending messages to members free.

reading should only be allowed for paying member.

Who wants to pay will pay, who does not want to pay will never pay.
