Topic: Stop the FREE dating service if you want to be in dating business

Hi

Just wanted to share my opinion about online dating service. For a long time I was running free dating service and put so much effort with a little or no return . Aren't we all working hard on our site so one day making good living from it? If your answer is yes then stop providing free service for FREE which will never get you anywhere since the dating business is saturated to make money of adsense. From adsense you might be making max of $100 a day if you are lucky and have a decent amount of traffic. You never can become like POF since Markus started in a right time and good market.  If you think you are going to be another POF think again. However if you provide a good service you can charge users and they will pay for it. Since I changed to paid servie I made more money than the tome I was giving free service a way and dealing with spammers. I am making a decent cash and want to thank VLD and hope they put more into their work to keep the product as good as big competition.

It can be free or it can be paid, it doesn't matter. What matters is how you market it and what you give to your users. You can be very successful both ways smile

If we want to provide a free service we will. I'm in it not just for the money (which is a nice bonus) but mainly to provide a community service. Its not all about stuffing banknotes under the bed.

Hello, Topfan!

And the same POF is not free. There to enjoy the many necessary functions, you have to pay.

I agree with you that Marcus started at the right time.

Therefore, free dating sites is "not going away." Sooner or later have to pay to enter the function.

Hi Topfan,
Thank you for your insights they really do sense to me.
I agree, it's better to concentrate your efforts on something that pays you back better than other things.
This way you can also provide better service to your existing site members by having more cash to do marketing - attract many more members, do some monthly challenges with great prizes and to be happier cause you can pay bills and buy beer and other motivating stuff. Eventually the happier site owner - the better for site.

I think that the paid dating sites are more serious then free dating sites !

Re: Stop the FREE dating service if you want to be in dating business

I have been allowing free memberships, however this has lead to what I consider an unacceptable level of "tyre-kickers", or, those simple curious.

I polled the site recently, and the majority of responses supported some sort of nominal fee to keep the time-wasters away, as they won't be interested in paying anyway.

I would like to structure it as a normal paying site, where basic membership = basic access, regular member = more access, and, premium members = access to everything.

The dilemma is how to offer this, which means contacting 00's of members, without excluding the genuine, and discouraging the useless.

I am thinking of creating the required groups and associated privileges, then for perhaps one month continued free access, but turning off all access, allowing enough time for those who really want it, to upgrade to their desired level.

Re: Stop the FREE dating service if you want to be in dating business

I use to run paid sites, than IMBRA became federal law. Myself and several other dating sites tried to fight the law in federal court as unconstitutional. We lost.

This law only applies to sites  in the United States. I don't think other countries have this law.

If you run a free site (no fees) IMBRA does not apply.

I don't want to debate IMBRA (do as you please), but just letting you know there may be other reasons why some sites are free, especially if running a paid dating site is so heavily regulated that costs make it almost impossible except for the larger corporate dating sites with deep pockets.

You can read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internatio … lation_Act

The fines are pretty stiff.

I'd love to move to a paid model but you need lots of members before you can consider it. I agree about the times wasters I get complaints as well but until you have 10K+ members, a subscription site wont work well

Re: Stop the FREE dating service if you want to be in dating business

What constitutes a 'time waster'? A non active member doesn't waste anyone's time from the admin point of view, and every website paid or not, has people who become inactive for all kinds of reasons. Vldpersonals has a great filter system for removing inactive members and I really can't see what the problem is. Members to who send messages to other members and don't get replies does not mean the member they contacted is inactive - most likely just not interested. Even if a member is inactive, its normal on any membership website and nothing to cause concern as far as I can see.

Re: Stop the FREE dating service if you want to be in dating business

This topic is getting to emotional. If you are running your site like a business then you have every right to collect a fee from your members whether you have 20,000 or 20 members. If you don't want to charge a subscription fee then use the credits system for a pay-as you-go model or better yet, reward your members with an automatic upgrade for generating referrals to your site (this actually grows the community).

Value your time and efforts and put a price on it!

Enough said.

Dragon, I believe here "time wasters" not the guys who waste their own time but also and that's more important they waste time of other site members who have serious intentions regarding being a member of site.

Exactly, these people also tend to disappear once they have to start paying.

The referral system is easily gamed using a proxy. Of course people have a right to charge for their site but who is going to pay for a site with 20 members? It's easier to make money from adsense for the first year while building your site into something worth paying for. I would feel guilty for ripping people off if i put a monthly charge for anything under 10K members. It also depends on the niche, for a specialized site, you might be able to get away charging for a few members. But that wont work for general dating

Re: Stop the FREE dating service if you want to be in dating business

I do upgrade members for referrals but its still all free. I'm not disputing anyone's right to charge for membership, what I'm disputing is Topfan's assertion that these sites are only for making money. Many are build for providing a community service which why they remain, and should remain, free. I certainly make an income from adsense but that's a byproduct.

Re: Stop the FREE dating service if you want to be in dating business

Hello,

I started my vld site last year and it is paid from the beginning. I have activate credits to send messages to each other.
Why is my site paid because I want to keep Scammers away.
remember Scammers will never pay. So I have created some membergroups, silver and gold member.
Most serious daters will upgrade their membership To silver or gold.
Scammers will also scam blogs  and Guestbooks just give standard members a limit.
I hope we can approve comments in the next release to keep the site clean.

I did this on my old site love2u before I bought a commercial vldpersonals dating software.
limited to sending 1 email/day for a week then they could upgrade to VIP membership and it was actually most of them done this so it worked well but unfortunately I could not move my old database with all my members so I had to start from the beginning and it had take a very long time sad

sometimes I get the feeling that free does not make a serious impression of members who want dating or meeting someone. so I'm going to rebuild love2u today so members can try it in one week and become vipmember after that and we will see how it works. I will tell you if it is working or not wink but not allways free is a good point !!!

(sorry for my english had little hurry then I wrote this post)

Exactly.
Time wasters = useless registrations = polluters of the site = frustrated genuine members (who may then leave).
I believe citak has a point in that those who are scammers, or simply curious, will not pay.

I came the forum a couple of days ago, after being away for months - already it feels like only yesterday.

Re: Stop the FREE dating service if you want to be in dating business

I disagree. My site, and plenty of others, are serious dating sites - I've been in the free dating business for 16 years. That's more serious than the many 'paid' sites that start up and fail.

Re: Stop the FREE dating service if you want to be in dating business

It don't think is should only be about the money, dating sites can have pretty great ratings if people trust the source and get what they need. That should be your only concern, once you hit this point money won't be a problem anymore. Free dating sites will always work.

Re: Stop the FREE dating service if you want to be in dating business

You can't really stop free dating.
However for every client there is a type of site. If you really want to run into real persons ... then a few bucks per month will do the trick. No spammer will pay money for something like this.

Re: Stop the FREE dating service if you want to be in dating business

my tactic is: let everything be free for 1 year, then after 1 year it will be paid, but it will still be cheaper, that the others dating sites in my country.
