Consider also that you can apply little modifications on a default template and make it unique.
Look how I customized redlove template just modifying header color, backgroud under header color, title tabs colors and footer color. I changed just colors of these items. Stop. No other things.
As you can see, it looks really different.

I have something similar already tried it, and I did not like as it is necessary to climb more in the CSS, the colors of the text were less suitable for the background.

That's the reason why I changed just some main colors with other ones compatible with the original ones and the existing text colors. Moreover, I didn't modify colors of details like borders of boxes, etc...
So I didn't need to modify any css.
red with purple
black with blue
light grey with light blue
It's obvious if you change a dark background with a light one you will have problems with the text over it.

You can do without one ... but then if you have a template just like other sites ... why would a visitor register with you and not the other sites? ( consider that you are new ... probably they are older so more members )

if you are serious about your project, then you don't want something that looks the same as alot of other peoples site, so yes, I would change it, probably just change my current template, to look unique
