Topic: populate site
Maybe this issue has been up before but I though it would be cool to now how other vld users populate their sites with users, do you spend a sack of money on advertising? google adwords? linkexchanges?

- get your friends to sign up
- get your friends to get their friends to sign up
- exchange links with other sites (not competitors but those related to your audience)
- advertise for your target niche
- don't give up hope 
There's most likely more, but those are the ones you can start with.

Don't bother advertising unless you have at least a few members or nobody will signup.
One thing you can do is join a banner exchange and also buy some traffic from trafficholder or similar. That way you will get lots of hits (most aren't productive) but you will also get the benefit of your banner showing on lots of sites due to all the traffic you purchased. If your doing this make sure that your banner is active in the banner rotation before sending the traffic.
Another idea is offline advertising in magazines, papers etc....

I don't know if this can be used by others; I have made a link on my "Free membership"-site to an A4-document with an "advertisement" in for members to hang up in educationscentres and workplaces, a link to a htm.site and to a pdf.file with small "visiting cards" to cut out and give away - al together "To help yourself and us" :-)
I haven't seen this idea before, but it works fine for me :-)
I also drive with a "streamer" on my car - and some friends do the same for me :-D
