Topic: Spammers Spammers Spammers

Can we somehow, create a list of spammers from the different vldpersonals websites and list them and maybe Auto ban them in future updates?

For example, on my site, this person
Username davidsharp
Username davidsharp
Password ****** << same as the other one
Email david_sharp14@yahoo.co.uk
IP: 41.220.70.3
Claims to be from US

Username michelle
Username michelle
Password ****** << same as the other one
Email luvmichelle4me@yahoo.co.uk
IP: 41.220.70.3
Claims to be from India

Just a suggestion

or add them to banned emails in admin

Re: Spammers Spammers Spammers

Not sure that will work as every one has different views. I have problems with Philippine IP numbers, but others may not. Some posters here have talked about banning a complete range of IP numbers, something I won't do as I know some numbers in each range may not relate to the same country/place as the others (good example is the 195. range). We could perhaps pool IP numbers of proven scammers, but it would have to be carefully password protected. Banning emails is also a problem as it is so easy for scammers to get a new one - how many "You've Won A Million Dollars" emails do you get? I get at least 5-6 every day. Everyone has a different email address. As fast as yahoo etc delete them, they sign up for a new one.

You've got an IP ban facility, use it, check your sign ups, and you'll find the problem will reduce. It will never go away. I've caught almost all African scammers right at sign up, I ban them and delete the profiles without sending any messages. A small amount of work keeps my members free of this.

May I ask for some feedback on vldPersonals IP tool. I remember in one post you said it lists the city, etc. I find myself using other IP tools because Arin does not seem to be accurate. Most of the time it lists the wrong information. Than again, maybe there is something about Arin's I don't understand and you can suggest some tips on how to use.

For example, below is the info on a member from PI, yet it lists them from AU. This happens 99% of the time:

OrgName:    Asia Pacific Network Information Centre
OrgID:      APNIC
Address:    PO Box 2131
City:       Milton
StateProv:  QLD
PostalCode: 4064
Country:    AU

ReferralServer: whois://whois.apnic.net

NetRange:   124.0.0.0 - 124.255.255.255
CIDR:       124.0.0.0/8

# Enter ? for additional hints on searching ARIN's WHOIS database

If I use other IP tools (I use about 3 different ones),  it shows she is from Manila Philippines which is what she reflects in her application.

It is hard to stop spammers if the info is not correct, but then again it could be I don't understand how to use Arin. I would love to change the IP tool in vldPersonals to something else if I knew how.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks
Dan

Re: Spammers Spammers Spammers

Yeah, the only way I actually noticed that is that the "About me" description was exactly the same, and one was a "woman" and the other a "man", bastards. Anyway, thanks guys.

If vlad approves, we can use this part of the forum for spammers email addresses and maybe update them every now and then, if you want you can, if you dont you dont have to.

Vlad? Thoughts?

Re: Spammers Spammers Spammers

Heres another sweet tip, spammers ALWAYS uses the same password for their profiles as the ones they use for their free email address accounts. I'm not suggesting anything. Just saying.

Re: Spammers Spammers Spammers

When searching Arin, if your IP is in Asia it refers you to APNIC, if in Africa to AFRINIC. You must then make as fresh search on the APNIC Whois (or AFRINIC, or RIPE etc). and you'll get the correct result. On APNIC look for the link "comment" http://www.apnic.net/apnic-bin/whois2.pl, click on it and you get their search form.

I think its important that if IP numbers are going to be posted here, it MUST be members only - or even better only for member who have actually purchased the product.

There is no a bit of sense in trying to collect all spammer's email addresses. It's the same as collecting thefts names from all over the world and checking customers passports against your 5 millions records list.

Re: Spammers Spammers Spammers

I have a script if anyone wants - it allows you to block whole countries - not 100% fool proof but gets rid of Nigeria and other typical scammer retreats

Re: Spammers Spammers Spammers

If you have the ability to block an entire range of IP addresses, you can block the entire AFRINIC network instead of each individual IP address. AFRINIC's networks begin w/ either 196 or 41. To block the entire network, block the range 196.0.0.0-196.255.255.255 and 41.0.0.0-41.255.255.255. Since I blocked AFRINIC my scammers have reduced significantly.

Re: Spammers Spammers Spammers

Well, that wont be nice, then I'll block myself.... and that would prove to be a problem big_smile

14

Re: Spammers Spammers Spammers

I've said before that blocking a whole IP range ca be a big problem as some IP numbers within those ranges are not always allocated to the countries you might expect. And there are lots of "special use" and "blackhole" IPs in those ranges too.

Re: Spammers Spammers Spammers

Yup - Yes dragon is right. it's never good to block a range, your IP might go through that range in some weird way and you wont be able to get into your own site. The best option would be to contact vld team then and ask them to log in and reset your banned ip's - what a mission.

Rather just add the IP's as they come along and gives you problems. Ask members to regularly report.

Or in the "Youve received a message on so and so site" email that goes to members, when they receive a PM, remind them that they can report any spamming, scamming and planning - and collect those IPs in your banned IPs collection
