Topic: Why we need groups

As my sites grow, I realize more than ever why vldPersonals needs to have groups. But it needs to be done fully and correctly.

When I think about it, your site has these layers of memberships with the first layer being the whole site itself. With the first layer you get all kinds of people signing up -- some  for the wrong reasons. You need a 2nd layer of Group Membership to help categorize members interests.

When I say doing groups right, a group is like a site within a site. The group has to be  its own site with an ability to communicate only within the group.

Oh well, I hope vlad does this right and adds groups to script. It is needed badly.

What kind of groups would you have if you had this feature?

- Found love group (found love and don't want to be contacted any more by those looking)

-- Marriage group (they are married but still want to be part of the site).

-- Just want friends group (are not looking for marriage but friendship)

-- Sex group (maybe not -- want my site to be family site).

-- Looking for Marriage (seriously looking for marriage and nothing else)

ETC

Yep, I've been looking for that also, since a while.
It seems many dating software have this function.
I would be good to steal some ideas from facebook, I'm sure of that...

Re: Why we need groups

Is there any news on a groups function? If not built in does anyone know of a mod that can do this?

Re: Why we need groups

But in reality, aren't we nearly there?

We have member groups.
Copy "Regular" to "Looking for Love", and restrict them from viewing other groups other than "Looking for Love"
The system has this already.

With some tweaking, all over the place not doubt, then when a user views "Pictures"/"Blogs"/etc, they are restricted to users from that Member Group ID.

In the sign-up procedure, users are asked what group they want to join.
They must ask Admin to be assigned to another group.

Does this not sounds close to what you're thinking of, given the way vld already works?

Then of course, when registering, there could be some free groups "Best Jokes", "I love my car", "Fishing Fans", "Equestrian Fans", etc.

Each group can only contact and see members from their own groups.
People wanting to join a group need to get approval from Admin.

Would this work?
