It gets REALLY, REALLY easily by-passed by spammers. Re-CAPTCHA is a much more robust tool

You can replace captcha images in the 'media/captcha' folder once in a while which will instantly stop spammers.

I am not saying that ReCAPTCHA is perfect. I'm just saying that it's more robust than the GD-powered solution. There are many more spammers that can break vld's captcha solution than ReCAPTCHA's one.

By the way, to make the whole system even more robust, I'd implement something based on Akismet. Any ideas?

I've got reCAPTCHA integrated recently. But unfortunately it can't be drop in extension and needs to slightly change very .php file captcha used at.
